Domestic ducks typically live for between 10-15 years, although the world record is held by a Mallard Drake who lived to the ripe old age of 27 years!

Duck Houses

An appropriate duck house is important not only for the comfort and raising of your ducks, but also to protect from predators. One of the first things to bear in mind is that your ducks need access to water, which can be either a natural source or for instance a pool you install. A good approach is to provide a secure house with an enclosed run. If you allow them to forage outside of the enclosure during the day your ducks should be brought into the enclosure each night. Unless trained to come back to the enclosure at night they will continue to forage into the night and will leave the enclosure any time it is not locked down. This will put them at greater risk than during daylight.

Duck Food

In the wild ducks are opportunistic eaters and will eat grass, aquatic plants, insects, seeds, fruit, fish, crustaceans and other types of food. In practice when keeping ducks domestically the staple food generally used is a duck feed, although this can be supplemented with other items. The duck feed will vary dependent on breed and age, although feeds will normally consist of wheat and maize, with soya bean meal and soya oil added in order to provide extra protein and energy. Minerals and vitamins are also added to protect against deficiencies.

Feather loss in ducks is often a sign of illness, although a duck that just loses feathers from the back of its head during the mating season is most likely just getting too much attention from the Drakes. Dull feathers are a sign a duck may not have access to water deep enough to submerge in and throw water over themselves. This will mean they are not able to spread the lubricating oil from their preening gland over their feathers. This should be attended to as this can have a bad effect on their health. Any awkwardness in their walk should be checked and dirty eyes or nostrils can be a sign they do not have access to deep enough water to dip their whole head and neck into. It is important ducks have this in order to be able to wash their eyes as they do not have tear ducts.

Duck Breeds

There are numerous breeds to choose from and your choice will be influenced by how many you want to keep, your experience and your preferences for meat or eggs. The Peking is a good choice for meat production, and has been used for developing other breeds intended for this use. The Muscovy is also good for meat production, and lay's about 100 eggs a year. They are also good insect harvesters for your garden. If your preference is eggs over meat, breeds to be considered are the three varieties of the Orpington, or the Campbell, which also has three breeds. In the event you are primarily interested in keeping ducks as pets, the smaller Call breeds which were bred to lure wild ducks into traps are probably most suitable. Their small size and nature makes them appealing and they are easy for children to handle. They can, however, be relatively noisy.

Valid Software Patents

In the United States, "...any new and useful process, machine, manufacture, or composition of matter, or any new and useful improvement thereof..." is patentable. In contrast, laws of nature, natural phenomena, and abstract ideas have been considered to be outside of this definition, and so are not patentable. For example, mathematical equations by themselves are not patentable.

Of course, nothing in the law, particularly patent law, is ever that simple. All inventions are based on fundamental abstract ideas and/or laws of nature. The telephone is based on acoustical, mechanical, and electrical laws. Yet no one would argue that the telephone was not patentable because it applies those laws to a unique and practical end.

However, what if instead of attempting to patent a telephone, Alexander Graham Bell had tried to protect the idea of converting audio signals to electrical signals and then back to audio signals. Would this invention be a process, machine, manufacture, or composition of matter, or merely a statement of the law of nature that information can be converted between mediums?

The Supreme Court of the United States has issued a number of rulings attempting to clarify what is and isn't patent subject matter. One decision, although directed to the biological sciences, has significant implications for software patents.

The patent in question claimed three key steps: 1) administering a dose of drug to a patient; 2) measuring a metabolite levels; and 3) changing the dose in response to the metabolite levels. One immediately notices that the steps describe what is done generally without any specific details about how it is done.

The Supreme Court found that these steps added nothing to the relationship between metabolite levels and drug levels. In other words, there is no practical application of a law of nature, natural phenomena, and abstract idea. As a result, the invention, although useful, was not patentable.

Most software patents have at their core an abstract idea. In order to be patentable, the practical application of the idea must be described. Unfortunately, in the past many patent applications have described quite abstract ideas that are performed by a computer, without including any details as to how the computer applies those abstract principles. This type of software claim is outdated. The Supreme Court is making it quite clear that the patent must describe the practical application to be valid.

Software patent applications should include details of how an invention is implemented both in the specification and the claims. In particular, the application details of the key inventive element must be described. By doing this, software inventions can be patented even if based on abstract ideas.

What Is Grape Seed Extract?

So what is grape seed extract and why should you care? These are great questions because this may be one of the most important alternative health medicines available.

Grapes have been used for centuries and historians believed that their roots began around the Caspian Sea, which is the largest lake in the world which is north of Iran and south of Russia.

Of course grapes and wines go together like peanut butter and jelly. In fact archeologists believe that the first uses of wine were around the country of Georgia near the Caspian Sea or northern Iran in 7,000 BCE. The BCE stands for before Common Era which is the same thing as BC that means before Christ.

Grape seed extract didn't really see a movement until people started seeing the health benefits of this substance. To make a long story short a bunch of sailors nearly died of scurvy. It's a condition in which someone doesn't get enough Vitamin C.

Native Americans saved their lives by making a tea from pine bark. A researcher saw this story then did some research and discovered something called OPC's that was also in grapes. OPC's in grapes were also more potent than in pine bark.

You might be thinking that grape seed extract is wonderful but are there any negative side effects. Like nearly all alternative health herbs there could be interactions with prescription drugs for instance like blood thinners.

Also there have been limited studies on humans so a few of the benefits like making humans live much longer may not be accurate. In conclusion this alternative medicine is awesome and I consume it.

The best way to take grape seed extract is with a dietary supplement. The dietary supplement industry can be tremendously helpful, confusing and also can be harmful.

The reason these products can be harmful is because companies don't even have to test a product to see if it's safe and many products have been recalled for being dangerous.

Replacing Negative Behaviors in Children With Habit Training

Parents often complain that they work on changing one irritating behavior only to find their child has replaced it with another annoying action. The easy solution to this problem is to choose the replacement behavior yourself and instill it as a habit.

All children have the ability to learn new ways of doing things and develop new habits or ways of relating. But when left to their own devices children, especially those on the Autism spectrum, will easily retire into their own little worlds and continue the patterns that have been wired into their brains. Therefore, establishing new behaviors of any type will take much encouragement and repetition over a span of time.

As the saying goes, even the most intelligent people typically have to do something twenty-one times before it becomes a habit. How much repetition and for how long depends on what it is you are trying to eliminate or change. Bad habits are harder to break because one has to struggle against the power of immediate reinforcement; such as, making my sister cry always gets me my mother's attention.

Replacing old behaviors with new ones also takes lots of focused energy and effort. If you want to eliminate a negative behavior and substitute it with a more acceptable one, patience and consistency are a must. Most children will need to have the new behavior labeled, taught and role modeled, followed by many opportunities to practice. This may be difficult for busy parents to do but essential nonetheless if a change for the better is the goal.

Breaking an old habit is like blazing a new trail in a jungle - it may not be as easy as following the well-worn path but worth it if it avoids the quicksand. As children routinely perform the same action over and over again, their brain slowly gets rewired as the alternative pattern of behavior creates new neural pathways. Once established, these will override the old ones and become the default behavior.

Here are five easy steps to habit train your child:

1) Choose a value or a behavior you want to instill or modify. Prioritize them in order of annoyance and start at the top only working your way down when the one above has been mastered.

2) Provide appropriate substitutes for behaviors you want to change. If you want to stop a behavior you need to introduce an appropriate alternative to take it's place and specifically train your child to use it.

3) Make it easy for your child to remember the new behavior. Train your child with prompts and reward the behavior you want to see more of. If you are trying to get your child to stop screaming post visual reminders for them to use their 'inside voice' all around the house and praise them immediately and specifically when she speaks appropriately.

4) Be intentional and consistent in your teaching. This means creating a plan of action, getting all household members on board with it and spending the time necessary to address the negative behavior you want to eliminate every time it surfaces.

5) Practice, practice, practice. Being extremely specific and concrete with your directives and using role-play as a tool will help children with Autism generalize from one situation to another. Giving children ample opportunities to practice new behaviors is extremely important and cannot be overdone if you want to achieve success.

Always remember that many negative, aggressive behaviors and tantrums in children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder often stem from an inability to communicate effectively. If you were a non-verbal child and unable to communicate your needs to get them met, wouldn't you tend to tantrum too? Even a child with some language ability, who is trying his best to communicate but can't get his point across, can easily become frustrated and discouraged.

In cases such as these, stopping negative behaviors may have more to do with improving communication than teaching substitute behaviors. Introducing alternative methods of communication and training them to use it can form new habits and ways of relating to people that result in more satisfaction and less frustration for all. An Augmentative or Alternative Communication (AAC) method or device may mean the difference between feeling invisible, isolated, and dependent versus being able to be seen/heard, interact and get their own needs met.

As parents we need to fully embrace our role as teacher or trainer and not shy away from it. Yes it is time consuming but consistently instructing and guiding our children is what gets the best results. If not, we are granting any and all behaviors permission to take hold. We all know that the deeper a root has established itself the harder it is to remove. So make your job easier and tackle those negative behaviors before they become too ingrained.
